Create like the Healthcare System

Regardless of the niche you are offering your services/products in, it is necessary to build a system that enables ease of creativity.

If you are not sure what system to build to ensure your creating a successful system, consider copying systems that other businesses use.

Today, I am comparing the healthcare system to an efficient creative system. Taking inspiration from my experience of working in the healthcare system for the past nine years.

Here are five suggestions inspired by a typical healthcare system that can be easily implemented into your creative system.

1) Have a Platform

  • Health care services only work because they have a location that can be googled and easily searched for. Having a permanent address that can be easily searched, keeps the health care system efficient.

  • Similarly in the creative system, it is necessary to invest in purchasing a domain name and owning a piece of the internet that is exclusively set up for your creative offering.

o   I use Squarespace to host Reibert-Anthony Studio

2)  Patient Experience

  • The best part of arriving at a healthcare provider is knowing exactly what specialties are at the clinic, simply looking at a directory to find the provider you are looking for.

  • In a creative system, always consider the customer/client experience when they are exploring your services/products. Consider thinking of four values that guide everything your brand shows.

3) Set Boundaries

Working at a clinic, any time an hourly employee works more than 40 hours a week they are paid 1.5 times their normal hourly pay.

o   My daytime job as a phlebotomist requires me to clock in at 0800, take an hour lunch break and leave by 1700. Any hours worked more than 40 hours is considered over time.

The same concept can be applied to your creative system. Set up specific times to do creative work. For me, it’s after I’ve had dinner, so usually from 7 pm- 9 pm. Also make time to eat a good meal and live an interesting life.

4)  Work within your Scope

A clinic is made up of different departments that all work together to be able to give quality care to the patients. Some of these departments never get any contact with the patient but have an influence on the experience the patient has with the clinic.

  • For example, the billing department does not have direct patient care but if they make a mistake in billing the patients insurance it affects the quality of care for the patient.

In building your creative system consider the responsibilities that can be delegated to other people.

  • For example, having an accountant to make sure you are filling your taxes correctly can make a huge difference.

5)  Be willing and flexible

Healthcare systems are too big to fail.

o   Our collective reality depends on an ability to measure our health and have access to medicine that prevents spreading of diseases.

Similarly, your creative system can be too big to fail.

o   Our collective ability to create and believe in the stories we tell ourselves and each other makes this reality tolerable.

Hope these suggestions help you create a better creative system for your small business.
