It’s the end of January 2021. This has been a rough start to my reading and illustration challenge. I will be sharing the WHY? WHAT? WHERE? WHEN? And MY FAVORITE QUOTES FROM Endure by Alex Hutchinson.

Then I will share some challenges I experienced this month and some adjustments I will make moving forward.

Why? Alex Hutchinson wrote this book to gather scientific evidence that explains what all is involved in endurance. His coverage of Nike’s Breaking2 is the main focus of the book. Nike spends a crap-ton of money to find the athlete that has the biggest potential in completing a marathon in less than 2 hours. Eliud Kipchoge is the Kenyan long distance runner that gets picked.

Endure definition is to suffer (something painful or difficult) patiently.

Endure definition is to suffer (something painful or difficult) patiently.

Where? This book starts and ends at the Formula One racetrack, Autodromo Nazionale Moza on May 6, 2017. This is where Eliud Kipchoge, the world’s best marathon runner, attempts to break the 2-hour marathon record.

What?

What is endurance? It is the brain and body connection ability to overcome the limits of pain, thirst, oxygen, fuel, heat and muscle.

The numbers are reference to the book chapter.

When? May 6, 2017, Eliud Kipchoge completed the marathon at an impressive 2:00:25.

Challenges & Adjustments

I chose this book because I am a fan of long-distance running and am currently training for the Austin Half Marathon in April 2021.

Between my day time job and training for the half marathon, it has been difficult to fit in time to read and illustrate. I am happy with the progress I have made in increasing my mileage in my training but it is time consuming. Next month I will make time to read and illustrate in the morning before work and only train in the evening. This month my attempt to train and create content was not efficient.

I know I won’t be breaking any records when I run the half marathon race but I am hoping to keep a 9:30ish pace and finish the race at about a 2:04:32 (Running Pace Calculator). As of now I think Im doing well in my train.

I am looking forward to reading and illustrating What I Talk About When I Talk About Running by Haruki Murakami in February.

Peace out,
